Types of IELTS essay questions:

Broadly speaking there are five types of Essay questions asked in IELTS writing section. These are for both Academic and General training IELTS writing tests.

  1. Opinion Essays

These are commonly called Agree or Disagree IELTS essays as well, Here you are presented with an opinion and you are asked to either Agree or Disagree, Once you have taken a stand you are expected to justify your stand by presenting you arguments. a. To What Extent do you agree or disagree

b. Do you agree or disagree

While taking IELTS test, you can always take a stand based on your understanding, like- Agree, Disagree or partially agree, before you decide on to a stand, make sure you have jotted down your key arguments to support your stand and you can elaborate on it.

2. Discussion Essays

These IELTS Essay questions give you a statement and ask to discuss both views, in some cases they may ask you to Discuss both Views and share your opinion.

Example:

Some people believe that healthcare should be free for all citizens, while other disagree. Discuss both views and present your opinion.

Some people believe that University education should be made free by the Government while other believe that it should be chargeable, Discuss both opinions and share your opinion.

3. Advantage and Disadvantage IELTS Essays

You may get two types of questions in this type of Essay questions.

a. Advantage and disadvantage Essays

Here you are presented with a statement and you have to explain both sides.

b. Advantages outweigh the disadvantages

Here you are given a statement and asked to present your reasoning, if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

4. Cause and Solution IELTS Essays

You may be presented with a known problem and asked to present the causes and suggest possible solutions.

Example:

Pollution, what are the causes and what can be done to reduce the pollution.

Global Warming, what are the causes and what can be done to reduce the pollution.

5. Direct Answer Essays
