Guidelines to write an effective essay
Plan before you write
How should you plan?
- Read the question at least two times, make sure you understand the task
- Create a coherent path from Thesis to conclusion
- Thinking is great, avoid thinking too much
- Have your ideas ready to include at right spots
- Have the topic related vocabulary ready (Practice is the key)
- Stay on Track
How to build a better Idea on any topic?
- Think of a set of questions that can be created on a particular topic, you may search for questions online as well.
- Look for sub topics
- Create a collection of words to be used for every topic
- Create list of synonyms for common words.
- Examples are important, do not try to write examples that do not support your arguments.
How does building an Idea help?
- Saves time
- Reduces Stress
- Saves energy
- Keeps you focused on the task at hand
- Reduces chances of your essay deviating from question.
Cohesion & Coherence
Cohesion:
Helps in Unity of sentences/paragraphs, Making key points link together, Linking one sentence to another, Connecting Paragraph to Paragraph.
What tools can we use: Conjunction, Transition or linking words and phrases, Prepositions etc.
What function does it have: Make or define connections/relation clear and evident
Coherence:
Helps us in creating Clarity and Balance in our presentation, Harmony, Flow, Logical progression to paragraphs, Making ideas connect with each other in a logical manner and work with each other to form a complete picture.
