How to write an effective Essay, IELTS Writing Task 2

Essay writing is the second task in IELTS Writing (Both academic and GT) . Here, we will discuss some key elements of Essay writing.

You are required to write a minimum of 250 words and justify your opinion with arguments, discussions, examples, proposing possible solutions. The ideal word count should be between 275 to 325 words. Make sure your arguments are logical and examples are relevant.

IELTS ESSAY writing should always follow a formal tone.

Do’s

  • Read the question carefully, Identify the topic and the task assigned.
  • Make notes of key points to support your arguments
  • Introduction Paragraph: use three key elements, Introduce the Topic, Paraphrase the question, State the aim of your Essay (this will give sense of direction to your essay)
  • Divide your Essay in four paragraphs
  • Paragraph two and three should be you main body, That is your key arguments elaborated, support your arguments with Relevant Examples.
  • Make sure you are addressing each section presented in the question

  • Use Formal Vocabulary
  • Present a wide range of vocabulary, use synonyms when possible
  • Maintain Sentence Fluency
  • Use different kinds of sentence structures like, Compound sentences, Complex sentences, Passive voice.
  • Use sentences using, Have Had, Has Had, would have, could have to enhance sentence fluency.
  • Use formal transitioning words like, Moreover, Nonetheless, additionally
  • Proof read or review your essay to ensure there are no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes
  • Keep track of punctuation marks, even these are considered as part of Grammar.
