How to present an effective answer
Writing Task One- email writing
Your questions are based on lifestyle situations in Canada, topics could be Job Application, Leave application, Restaurant complaint, hotel booking, letter to city administration, letter to hospital, communicating with school teacher, etc.
a: Read the question carefully
b: Identify the topic
c: Identify the task
d: plan your answer to cover all the three tasks
e: keep the tone polite and professional (even if it’s a complain email)
How to Structure you Email
Ideally your email should be written in three or four paragraphs, keeping an ideal word count of 170-200. Try not writing over 200 words, and, under no circumstances writing less than 150 words.
Before you start writing a response, read the question carefully. Understand the context which is provided and identify the tasks. Generally you are asked to present your answer in three steps, Ex-
a. Higher police presence to prevent crime
b. Improvement in civic facilities
c. Opening of a commercial project in the area to increase employment
These three points provided in the question give you a sense of direction and at the same time ask you to provide an explanation/presentation to the three tasks.
Once you have fully understood the question, plan you writing,
Think of key arguments that you will be presenting.
It is always better to have two key arguments and giving a thorough explanation of these.
Sometimes we make an error of presenting many key points and not explaining them. This can lead us to lose score.
ONE THING WE MUST REMEMBER THAT OUR KEY ARGUMENTS MUST HAVE SOME EXPLANATION GIVEN, EVEN IF IT IS ONE SENTENCE, IT WILL ADD VALUE TO YOUR PRESENTATION.
Now let’s look at how the paragraphs are to be written.
Paragraph One:
There should be three elements in the introduction paragraph,
A: GREETING,
B: Introduce the topic/Paraphrase the question
(This is done to inform the examiner that I have read the question you presented, I can understand what you are saying and I can represent the same in my own sentence. That is I have a good understanding and command over English language.)
C: share the reason for writing this email.
Paragraph Two:
This is your main body of the email, ensure you present a key argument and present an explanation that is elaborate your key point.
You can back up your explanation with an example, however, you should not present a fake example- if you have a realistic example related to the topic it will be a good help.
Paragraph Three:
You may also present another body paragraph to address next part/parts of the task.
The tasks presented must be addressed completely in the two body paragraph.
Paragraph Four:
In this paragraph you present your request or demand, here you should also use words like Appreciate to thank the recipient.
This paragraph is basically a summary of what you have already written; keep it short and precise (to the point). Do not repeat what you have already written, at the same time do not add any new arguments/key points here.
